“Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” It sounds inspiring, but it’s not the whole story.
Loving what you do isn’t enough. You also need to love how you do it—and that depends on your personality style.
Why Your Job Might Be Draining You
You can be great at your job, even enjoy it, and still feel drained. The problem isn’t always the work itself. It’s the mismatch between your role and your wiring.
Picture this:
- A talkative, high-energy Parrot stuck in a cubicle crunching data all day.
- A detail-focused Owl forced to schmooze at endless networking events.
- A gentle, supportive Dove in an aggressive sales office. Exhausted
- A bold, results-driven Eagle is buried in repetitive tasks.
When your job fits your style, it energizes you. When it doesn’t, it depletes you.
Turning Mismatches into Momentum
People tend to cluster in careers that suit their personality. Engineers are often Owls. Marketers bring Parrot energy. Customer service teams are full of Doves. Attorneys are often Eagles (and Owls).
But thriving doesn’t always mean switching fields. It means finding the right fit within it.
Take Dania, an Eagle nurse. Surrounded by caring Doves and detail-driven Owls, she felt out of sync, until she moved to the ER. Fast decisions and the unknown fueled her. Same career, perfect fit.
Or Peter, a Parrot/Dove in IT. Coding drained him. But on the help desk, he shined, talking with people and lifting moods. He didn’t leave tech, he brought his personality to it.
Love What You Do and How You Do It
Career fulfillment isn’t just about passion. It’s about alignment. You don’t need to change careers to find energy again. Sometimes you only need to shift your role, your clients, or your focus.
You’re not looking for a job you love. You’re looking for a job that lets you come alive.
Ask yourself:
- What parts of my day energize me?
- What parts drain me?
- Does my role reward who I am or require me to hide it?
Your best work comes when you can express your personality in everything you do.
